I had a malossi kit fitted to my vespa px125 a couple of months back, and I wondered if there is a connection with the fact that my kick start now doesn't function. I always use the electric start. Today, I thought I'd kick it over. There was no resistance, and didn't turn at all. Common sense tells me that if it worked before it went in for the work and it doesn't now ... there's the connection. But, I don't won't to be fobbed off by the workshop. Nice as they are, I want to know what's happening and how the problem is related ( if it is ). Any advice would be very welcome. ps - I'm not so dense that I was holding the clutch in!!! Cheers. p

It wouldn't have been the fitting of the Malossi kit. That's literally just changing the barrel, piston, and main jet in the carb. Unless you had the engine ported too? In which case the engine would have been taken apart.

Sounds to me that your clutch is slipping. When you push the kickstart down, it connects to the gearbox, which turns the clutch, which is on the left side of the crankshaft. If the cork on the clutch plates are worn, they will slip against the metal plates, rather than gripping, and your crankshaft won't turn.

Using the electric starter turns the flywheel, which is directly connected to the crankshaft. That's why it starts ok using that.

That makes sense, any other signs of slipping clutch? Sometimes I have trouble going into first, it's a bit of a wrench. I've been taking off from the lights in second more often than not. Is that related?  I didn't have the engine ported BTW.  Cheers

Problems getting it into gear could be a partially broken gear cable where a strand has bunched up somewhere and is causing problems, gear cables aren't lubricated, or a knackered gear selector box.

One way to test the clutch is to set off in first gear with the clutch fully out. Go snails pace slow. Then, open the throttle right up. If the plates are slipping, the engine will rev but your speed won't pick up. This test doesn't always work, it depends on how worn the plates are. I recently did a clutch plates change for someone with this very problem and they said they hadn't noticed clutch slip while riding, only starting on the kickstart. I changed the plates and it was as right as rain again.
