Hi!

I am a studnet and recently moved into a rent property. I signed up for a broadband service, and recieved a netgear router (DG834G 54mps) and after alot of attempts (over two weeks) i finally got it setup and running on my computer. During the insallation i had been having problems with the ADSL.

However finally i got in connected and the interent was working, i was on it all day, and then the morning the next day, however it then dissconected and since then has been connecting for a few seconds then dissconecting for a long period.

The inernet light on the light turns off, then flashes yellow, then turns green for a short period of time (it also did this before the day i connected to the interent but that day it did not)

I was wondering if anyone knew what the problem could be. the day it worked i had unscrewed the phone socket aqnd pushed the adsl micor filter in tightly, however i have tried this since but it has not helped.

any help would be greatly appreciated, thankyou.

Hi remboi, welcome to the forum.

I have almost the same netgear router as you (dg834gt). The Netgear routers, to be honest aren't the greatest bits of hardware and seem to have a lot of faults. I'm on Sky Broadband which came with that router. I found through searching on the net that they tend to get too hot so I have stood mine upright using the provided stand which has seemed to help in keeping it cooler.

If you've only recently had your broadband it could be that the telephone exchange is just adjusting to the speed that you can connect to the net without cutting off. This takes 5 days or so and during that time you should expect it to keep cutting off. It works the same way for everyone the first time they are connected to broadband. Eventually it'll settle down and you'll be able to connect for days at a time if you want.

The light flashing that you mention is the router rebooting itself.
Sometimes I have to pull the plug out, leave for about 10 seconds and plug it back in and it sorts out the problems I've been having.

One thing you really should do is change the admin password for the router. The router has it's own web pages inside it and anyone on the net who knows what they're doing could make your router reboot, or even worse change the password and lock you out of it.

To set your own password you should do this: start up internet explorer and type into the address bar: 192.168.0.1
A password box will pop up from your router asking you for a username and password. If you are on Sky Broadband the username is: admin and pass is: sky

If you are not on sky the username and pass are: admin and admin
Once you are into your router, click on the 'Set Password' option and change to pass to one you'll remember.
If you've had broadband for a couple of weeks now and it keeps cutting off the you should phone your ISP and if they don't give much help, ask for a new router and say the old one is faulty.

Whilst your in the router may aswell switch on the WEP protection even if you change password you could be hacked via wireless or any one could use you wireless and nick ya bandwidth hence slowing your connection. If like me your on sky check out the skyuser forums with loads of tip and faqs
