Recently I move to work in London and I plan to bring my 50 special here. But in France, we don't need any plate for 50cc. Can you explain me what I can do to get one or if I need one? Thx guys for your help !

Hello. All vehicles in the UK have to have a registration plate. If you haven't got a French registration number then you will have to get a UK number.

If you don't mind having a Q plate registration number then it's easier. Example of British Q plate is 'Q641 VMF'. They all start with the letter Q to say that they have been issued a registration number sometime after the vehicle was first on the road.

The first thing you have to do is insure your vehicle. All UK vehicles have to have at least third party liability insurance. You can get 'third party, fire and theft' insurance which is better in London in case someone steals it. Normally to get insurance you have to give the registration number but most insurance companies will accept the frame number, then when you are issued a reg-number, you tell them what it is.

Next you have to get an M.O.T. An MOT is similar to Germany's TUV certificate. Your lights, brakes and safety of your vehicle is tested.

Next you have to get a form from the DVLA (department of vehicle licencing authority) so that you can register your scooter. Fill the form in with your frame number, engine number, cc and anything else needed on the form.

When you submit your form with your insurance certificate and MOT certificate they will issue you with a registration number starting with Q. At the same time you have to buy 1 years road tax (road fund licence. £15 for 50cc). Then you will be legal to drive and have a UK registration plate.

If you don't want a Q plate and you want a plate from the same year as your scooter was made you will have to join the Vespa Club of Great Britain or the Vintage Motor Scooter Club. They can issue you with a dating certificate which will prove what year your scooter was made. If you give this certificate when you apply for your registration plate, they will give you an age related registration number from the year of your scooter.

Sorry the explanation is so long but it is a hard process. If you are only visiting London, it would be cheaper and easier to buy a scooter here rather than import your one. If you are coming here to live then it may be worth doing.

If your scooter has no french registration plate on the back then you will have to get a UK one as I described above.

If you have a French registration plate then you can use it in the UK and use your French insurance (as long as it covers you for outside of France travel).
